Eat, Drink, Sleep and Explore

Bamburgh Castle

Iconic Bamburgh Castle – whom our inn takes its name from – towers over the sands some three miles away. And you can enjoy views to this magnificent castle, once seat of the Royal Kings of Northumbria, from our sea view lounge.

Bamburgh Castle is open all year round. Look out for events and activities taking place there, too.

The Farne Islands

No trip to Northumberland is complete without a visit to the famous Farne Islands. Declared by Sir David Attenborough as his favourite place in the UK to see nature at its best, the Farne Islands are a must!

The islands themselves have been home to St. Cuthbert, the famous Anglo Saxon monk, and of course, to Victorian heroine, Grace Darling.

Take a boat trip from Seahouses harbour to see thousands of breeding pairs of sea birds and one of the UK’s largest grey seal colonies. Several boat companies operate from the quay.

Holy Island

Just half an hour’s drive up the coast is the unique island of Lindisfarne. Known as the Cradle of Christianity, Lindisfarne is famous throughout the world for its medieval religious heritage.

This tidal island is only accessible via a paved causeway which is covered twice daily by the North Sea, making it inaccessible at certain times of the day. For safe causeway crossing times please click here. Why not pop into our sister inn, The Lindisfarne Inn for a delicious bite to eat?

Other Historic Places of Interest

Famous for its history, the Northumberland coast and its surrounding areas have a plethora of castles to visit within driving distance of the Inn.

Ayton Castle, Warkworth Castle. Floors Castle, Edlingham Castle, Norham Castle, Duns Castle, Dunstanburgh Castle, Dilston Castle, Bamburgh Castle, Chillingham Castle and Etal Castle all provide opportunities for you and the family to take in Northumberland’s history and outstanding natural beauty.

Alnwick Castle

Known as the ‘Windsor of the North,’ Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England and home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, whose ancestors have lived here since 1309.

Dramatically situated on the edge of the town, the castle battlements rise above stunning Capability Brown grounds and resonate with history, from the 14th century exploits of Harry Hotspur, to the grisly Gunpowder Plot. Now renowned as the magical setting for ‘Hogwarts’ in the Harry Potter films, as well Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and numerous television programmes, it is true deja vu territory.

Sporting Activity

The Inn itself is situated at the heart of sporting Northumberland with many golf courses, shooting and diving destinations along with major walking and cycling routes nearby.

Goswick, Bamburgh, Alnmouth, Berwick, Seahouses and Dunstonburgh golf courses all provide a tough test in links golf. While for diving enthusiasts, St. Abbs’ shore diving provides one of the UK’s most enthralling destinations. For country sports, both Bywell shooting ground and the river Tweed make shooting and fishing a viable option when staying with us at the inn.
